Hanna’s story arose from the author’s dream – filled with gnomes, dwarves and elves, a reminder of his long-held boyhood imaginings of fairy folk and his fascination with the unseen world. The dream stayed with John and he eventually set it down into words and felt an urgency to share it.

Originally from Friesland, a northern region of the Netherlands, John spent his childhood years in the Dutch East Indies. During his early adult life, he wandered through Norway and Sweden before emigrating to Canada where he dedicated his time to a career in forestry and to his family, including his wife, Ellen, and his two daughters. At the age of seventy-two he retired then embarked on a new adventure to Tanzania for the next twenty years. At the age of one hundred, he now lives in Deep River, Ontario, surrounded by what he loves – forests and water, the prism that inspired him to write his fairy tale.
