An excellent debut novel (4 out of 5 stars)

When Alice Dempster meets a rugged stranger by her late son’s tombstone, it turns a lot of townspeople’s heads in The Angel’s Kissing Spring, Luciano DiNardo’s moving and sensual first novel. Both Alice and her new friend are mysterious characters with rough pasts, and as the other people in their small town become increasingly hostile toward them, it raises many questions about the true decency of so-called good citizens.

A Shakespeare-quoting sheriff and a gossipy ladies’ auxiliary supporting the then-recent World War II, are just a few of the characters whose ominous shadow hangs over Alice’s dream-like existence; by the riveting end of the novel, it becomes clearer that the social lines between the righteous and the outcasts are not as sharp as you might think. DiNardo writes beautifully, sometimes harshly, but always effectively, in a very adult story of redemption and love that is highly recommended.
