Carl A. White
Born in Saint John, Carl White is noted for his activism and community engagement. He worked as an Officer of the New Brunswick Human Rights Commission beginning in 1986, until his retirement in 2019. In 1998 he was elected as a councillor for the City of Saint John. Three years later, he became the city’s first Black Deputy Mayor and served until his defeat in 2008.
Before entering politics, White was involved in sporting events in his community, helping to coordinate exhibition games for the CFL and NBA, as well the Annual Skate to Care program in support of mental health, and the National Touch Football Championships for 1990 and 1993. White has also served as a member of the R.C.M.P. Commissioner’s Diversity Advisory Committee, a board member for the United Way of Greater Saint John, and a member of the Saint John Human Development Council and Saint John Non-profit Housing. He later joined the Saint John Mill Rats Professional Basketball Team as their vice-president of public relations, and in 2010, was selected to serve on the Board of Govenors of the NB Sports Hall of Fame. White served as an executive member of PRUDE Inc. (Pride of Race, Unity and Dignity through Education) until 1995 and as President between 1983 and 1993.
He has received many awards for his community service and has been profiled in Who’s Who in Black Canada.
