Just Where You Stand

Through three generations three obsessive husbands undermine the lives of those around them. Alcohol consumes one and an increasingly popular but controversial religious sect takes over the other two. It is Victorian Berkshire, England and a dying, neglected and abused mother tells her son George that she is not good enough for heaven. Deeply dismayed, George spends ten years seeking a Christian faith which will not condemn her to Hell. He finds a new and controversial sect which suits him and he joins up. Unexpected financial repercussions arise and in 1913 George moves his family across the Atlantic hoping to find good work in Toronto, Canada. His son-in-law turns out to be an obsessive sort as well. Like George’s unfortunate mother in her time, George’s wife and daughter in turn fit their lives to their circumstances just where they stand.
