Laima Zarins lives in the serene country of Latvia, with her sister, Valda, and their parents, Akselis and Lilija. She often swims at the nearby beach off the Baltic Sea, where amber rocks glisten along the shoreline, sparkling like the sun. Life is peaceful and happy until the Russian armies invade Latvia at the start of World War II. Laima has never witnessed violence, but now people are being beaten, and dead bodies lying in the streets have become frequent sights of horror. The family is forced in a DP (Displaced Persons) camp in Germany where they labour under first Russian, then German military rule. Akselis and Lilija dream of going to America, the land of freedom. Each day they must face hunger, death, and the insecurity of now knowing what heartache tomorrow might bring.

As Laima and Valda grow up, they, too, dream of freedom, success, and love. Will they find peace? Love? What will happen along the way?
