Ken Armson
Ken Armson was born in Newtonbrook, Ontario and attended secondary school in England. After service in the Canadian Army overseas, he studied forestry at the University of Toronto graduating in 1951 and worked in the Ontario Department of Lands and Forests. In late 1952 he joined the Faculty of Forestry at the University of Toronto to teach and undertake research in silviculture and forest soils. In 1975 he was asked by the Ministry of Natural Resources to report on the state of forest management in Ontario and joined the Ministry in 1978 to implement his recommendation that forest companies assume responsibility for forest management on provincial forest lands. He remained with the Ministry as Chief Forester and then as Provincial Forester until his retirement in 1989. While at the university and again in retirement he was active in consulting with both the forest industry and provincial governments primarily on forest regeneration and sustainable forest management standards. In 2016 he was elected an Officer of the Order of Canada. He is married with one son and lives in Toronto.
