I wanted to congratulate and thank you for the wonderful account of the history of Le Hibou as chronicled in your very fine “We Are as the Times Are”. Your book made me wish I could go back there just once and be a part of the magic you described and captured so well. I picked it up recently at Perfect Books while in Ottawa as part of the Ottawa International Writers Festival–and being squired to venues by Neil Wilson who I believe you know or at least who knows you. For me the book is a bonus. I am currently at work on my third novel in a mystery series (published by Dundurn, Toronto)–the first book in the Cullen and Cobb Mysteries came out at the end of 2014. It was titled “Serpents Rising”–the second book in the series, “Dead Air”, has been completed and we are in the editing process leading up to a January 2017 release but it is the third book in the series that will be indebted to your fine work. The working title is “The Last Song Sung” and will see the two central characters in search of a singer who disappeared almost fifty years earlier while performing at The Depression in Calgary–where, by the way, I saw a wonderful young singer named Joni Anderson perform. Your book will be or immense help as I strive to re-create that time and the folk club/coffee houses that were such a vital part of the era. Several, including Le Hibou, will be part of the cold case search that (crime journalist) Adam Cullen and (ex-cop turned detective) Mike Cobb attempt to bring to a resolution. So thank you again for what has been a very pleasant and useful part of my research and a thoroughly delightful read.
