Anthony (Jo) Johansen grew up in England during World War II, joined the British Merchant Navy, and rose to the rank of captain before leaving for Canada to attend McGill University in Montreal. Armed with a Bachelor of Commerce degree with a major in economics and his Master Mariner qualifications, he joined the Canadian federal government, working with the Harbours Board, the Department of Transport, and the Prime Minister’s Office. When he retired, he remained in Ottawa, although he travelled frequently to Britain.
Jo was a renowned storyteller, jazz pianist, choir singer, broadcaster for VoicePrint, writer, and photographer. He loved to sail Trevose and to travel with his wife, Joy. He died in Ottawa in 2011.
